Your Spouses Role in Your Job Search

Your Spouses Role in Your Job Search In 2010 I was inspired to write this post: The Spouses Role in Your Job Search I wrote this about 4 years after I got laid off because I had, by that time, worked with many job seekers, and was realizing that my personal experience with my job search and my wife was par for the course for almost everyone I talked to. That is, it is a very lonely experience, and we just didnt know how to communicate during my job search. We got to a point where we would communicate good news with one another, but the problem was that there wasnt good news. I was running into brick wall after brick wall, with no real success. With all of these failures, with the lack of good news, I found that we werent communicating at all. Not good for a relationship. I wrote this post with 13 points and I am hopeful that it helps you recalibrate with your spouse during this exceptionally difficult period. I want you to take any of my points, and any others that you come up with,  and then sit down with your spouse and have a real, open conversation. The job search is not a time for a relationship to pause. I encourage you to keep the communication open and real, and realize that your job search is temporary, and hopefully your relationship will weather this hardship (and others) just fine. Best wishes to you and your significant other as you navigate this very difficult period together! 10 Unusual Careers That You Will Love

10 Unusual Careers That You Will Love Once upon a time, when you asked someone “What are you doing? or “What do you plan to do after college?”, the reply would be: “Engineer, Doctor, Scientist or Businessman”. Nowadays, if you ask people what do they do, be prepared to get some unexpected and surprising responses. Careers and professions have changed dramatically and in some curious directions. Non-traditional occupations are becoming increasingly popular. The US Department of Labor defines that these occupations make up 25% of the total populations workforce and that these jobs offer increased salary options. If you dont like being out of your comfort zone, these opportunities will offer you exciting chances to challenge yourself. As people have evolved over time and as knowledge and information have made the world smaller, people’s concepts of work have changed. Today, career and professional options have changed, presenting young graduates with a plethora of unconventional jobs. Now people are no longer motivated to just fit into a role, but more importantly it has become important to find a role which revolves around them. It is more about a role which defines them. It can be unorthodox, and sometimes even dangerous. And hence, over time, adventurous spirits have broken barriers and ventured where none have before. Not only that, jobs that used to be considered derogatory, embarrassing or dangerous, are now getting a lot takers who are willing to do what it takes. It is no longer just about money or perks, its about finding your passion, purpose and vitality. It is about making life an adventure. Sound exciting? Do you dare to break the norm and try your hand at a non-traditional career? Here are 10 such non-traditional career choices, which will not only give you a taste of adventure, but may also leave you pound rich in the bargain. 1) Dangerous dividends with crab fishing! Have you heard of crab fishing? It may sound like an easy and low paid job but the Discovery channel reports that this is one of the most dangerous jobs in the world. You have to endure the vagaries of the savage and stormy sea, near freezing weather, and seasickness and maybe homesickness! The pros are that crab fishing seasons are limited in duration, and your efforts will only have to last a short duration, after which you can rest upon the catch you fished. In addition, you will hit the jackpot, as one fisherman can take home nearly $50, 000 worth of crabs in just 8 weeks! 2) When work and play combine with professional golf Imagine a scenario when your work becomes play and vice versa. And that is what happens when you take up a career as a professional business golf networking consultant for women. Your job will be to help otherwise confident and skilled women to take up golf, considered to be a game which can humble even the most arrogant. You can end up setting up your own Academy or Consultancy and make millions! 3) Diving for pearls Pearl diving may sound tedious, boring and extremely risky. But the bonuses are high, if you are ready to slog physically, to train yourself to be in a state of readiness and fitness, and prepare yourself with the skills and considerable diving experience requisite for this. If you do so, you are in for an experience of a life time. A pearl divers job is to dive to underwater pearl farms and harvest the pearls from the oysters as well as to seed them. Some of these oysters are grown for this purpose, while others may be naturally producing pearls. A successful pearl diver can earn as much as $1200 in day, during the diving season. But in order to do it, you have to remain fit all the time and spend hours underwater. Ready for it? 4) Scare the crows away This kind of job would be really up your alley, if you live in a rural area and you don’t want to work too hard but want to earn good money! All you need to do is to pose as a scarecrow in a farm. Pose and scare away your neighbourhood crows and youll earn $10-$15 per hour as pocket money. 5) Sperm or egg donor If you are of an altruistic nature and want to earn your living on this, you can try this out. You can not only get good money but also get satisfaction thinking about how many people you might help who face fertility problems. There is a bias towards women here as the process of extracting an egg is more difficult as compared to obtaining sperm. In this non-traditional career women can earn up to $8000 per egg, while men can earn around $200 for a donation. 6) Protecting assets Security guards are everywhere, but how many of you know that this underestimated job can provide you with considerable earnings? Especially if you work for a celebrity. You can apply for this job if you have no problems with being assigned with the daily protection of a celebrity. The good thing is, you can earn between $500-$1000 a day and depending on where you are, your salary can start from $60,000. 7) Music makes money If your passions lie in music, you are extremely knowledgeable about music and are passionately fond of the lives of celebrities, then being a celebrity DJ or a fashion DJ will be a job you will thoroughly enjoy. Your role would be to organise music and fashion at celebrity parties. You would have the time of your life playing the music you love, watching people dance to it and get to know your favourite celebrities. And youll make a pile too! 8) Social Media Manager Tweeting all the way to the bank The cutting edge era of social media provides another interesting and radical avenue for those of you who want a life out of the ordinary. If you are passionate about social media and like engaging with people, you will love this job. If communicating on social media is your favourite way to spend the day, then this is a great way to earn a good amount of money. Of course, you would need to spend a considerable amount of time online. But thats not an issue, is it? 9) Lipstick reader This job is for any woman (or man) who loves lipstick and requires you to read lip prints, especially of affluent ladies at posh parties. What is more, you get paid richly for your prediction of the future! An unusual and easy way to make money, once you learn how. 10) Voice over work If you have a great voice and you love reading from books and other textual matter, you can try this out. Voice over involves dubbing for the television and audio productions, amongst other things and you can easily make more than $300 for 5 minutes of recording. How To Set Big, Scary Goals in 3 Easy Steps [STORY]

How To Set Big, Scary Goals in 3 Easy Steps [STORY] Thanks for all your sweet words on my last email about what other people have to say when it comes to your career and goals.  I guess I struck a chord! Today I want to talk about scary goals  dreaming WAY bigger than you are right now. You see, I just laid out my dreams for CCG for the next year and they are big and very scary.  If your dreams dont scare you, they arent big enough, right? What spurred on my scary goals was that over the last week, I have been caught up in the personal lives of high school classmates on Facebook. I havent talked to these people in years but one of my classmates passed away from cancer and another classmate lost her newborn daughter. All I could think is that life truly could be over any day. So I created my plan for the next year with this thought in mind: If this was the last year of my life, what would I do?  Whats stopping me from doing what I want to do in 5 years.this year instead?     There is something about May that is kind of like my own new year. My life and career ALWAYS goes through such a transition every May. I dont know if it is because its my own birth month or the change of the seasons, but this year is no different.   [RELATED: 11 Pieces of Career Advice No One Tells You] Here are the quick highlights of the last five years of my May life changes: May 2011: After a year of trying, finally getting pregnant.(later ending in a miscarriage) May 2012: After another year of trying, finally getting pregnant again.(later ending in a miscarriageyep thats rightTHE SAME THING..one exact year later) May 2013: Learning that our two little babies didnt survive during IVF. After some major grief and devastation, I read a Tony Robbins book, watched The Secret, pushed my motherhood dreams aside and invested in a coach. THIS IS WHEN I STARTED DREAMING BIGGER. I created crazy and scary goals. I wrote down my dreams and finally committed to making my dreams happen. I said NO to what was holding me back and YES to me! May 2014: I said adios to my blah day job and left for maternity leave.  I prepared for the transition to become a mom and bring a beautiful miracle baby into my life. When my husband and I stopped trying and I reduced all the work stress from my life, she arrived so easily, seamlessly, and just like there truly was a plan for my life. Thanks, God. May 2015: Rebranding my website. Re-designing my life. Celebrating my first mothers day all month long (because why not!) and preparing to celebrate my daughters first birthday with a girls trip to San Francisco with my best friend.   So whats the plan for this month? I think I will be completing my biggest and scariest goals ever!   Are you with me? Do you want to make this the best year of your life too?   If so, do this now: How To Set Big, Scary Goals in 3 Easy Steps 1) Write down what is holding you back. It is time to say no and just let it go. What are you tolerating that is bringing you down over and over again? What do you keep trying to do and working SO HARD at but you just keep getting the door slammed on you over and over again? 2) Write down your wildest and scariest goals. What do you want to do in 5 years or 10 years?  What does your dream life and career look like? Dont hold back. Get magazine photos. Start pinning your dreams on Pinterest. Write it down in a journal what you want to make. Anything is truly possible for you. 3) COMMIT to making that goal happen in one year. Because who has time to wait 5 or 10 years?  None of us. Life is too precious. Lets speed up the process this year, shall we? Just stick with me because we are going to fly this year. Love, Anna Runyan

Why Companies are Turning to an On Demand Workforce

Why Companies are Turning to an On Demand Workforce The following is a guest post by  Dan Gaffney of VouchedIn.com.  His bio follows.   It’s no secret that today, people desire more flexibility in their careers. Some enjoy the perks their office offers, such as day care, nap pods, free food, massages, gyms, and even treadmill desks. Still others are ready to leave the traditional 9-5 behind and take a road less traveled, yet one that is growing rapidly. Statistics say that the temporary/freelance workforce is projected to hit 40% of the total market by 2020, and not just in the U.S. Thanks, in large part to the Great Recession of 2008, companies found themselves cutting their workforce to save the business, yet still had more work than their remaining employees could maintain. Seeking Balance As saving money on salaries and benefits was key for the survival of companies across the country, they began to transition much of their workforce into freelance and contract positions to keep the business moving forward. To fill gaps, companies turned to temporary staffing firms, which was one of few sectors to see massive growth during the Great Recession, with reason. For many people who moved into these new roles, they found the lifestyle and flexibility of working on a freelance basis very attractive. However, they also faced the challenge of finding work to build a successful, sustainable career. Due, mostly, to the dependency on temporary staffing firms, which negotiate down the rates of qualified, experienced professionals, most professionals, then and now, accept a mere 30-50% of their regular hourly rate just to get the work. Yet, not enough to sustain a mortgage, car payment, day care. Technology, and the internet, came to the rescue of these career freelancers by giving them the opportunity to make themselves readily and directly available to employers, while providing employers with an on demand workforce at their fingertips. Dozens of websites popped up to address the market and capture a little bit of the staffing industry’s growth for themselves. Most prevalent are those that cater to the graphic designer, marketing or writer-types for smaller, one off projects. Few offer enterprises a solution for highly skilled candidates to fill the needs of their departments, or freelancers the kind of long-term, high paying projects that can sustain a career, family and life. Finding Balance With VouchedIn.com, employers are able, for the first time, to more accurately locate qualified freelancers who meet their needs, and hire them right away through its proprietary “matching” software, which gives candidates a “project suitability ranking”, making hiring candidates much more efficient and immediate for companies. Meanwhile, the startup benefits freelancers by allowing them to earn closer to their full rate (taking a mere 15% for a service fee, compared to up to 70%), and thus create a sustainable career in freelancing and a better quality of life. “Most websites out there for freelancers focus on small, one off projects. VouchedIn strives to connect freelancers with more substantial, long-term projects, or reoccurring work, and employers with the best qualified freelancers,” said Dan Gaffney, Founder of VouchedIn. “We know companies are looking for part-time, or per-project team members and they don’t have time to dig through pages of candidates, or for turnover due to being directed to the wrong candidate. They need great, qualified, vetted candidates fast, and on demand.” Removing The Middleman And, while it may seem that VouchedIn is no different from other temporary work referral sites out there, one journalist, after reviewing the software, said Vouchedin.com is seeking to do to short-term staffing placements what Monster did to newspaper classifieds and what Apple did to the recording industry: leverage the internet to cut out the middleman, re-channeling profits to both the worker and the employer….” The reason why, is clear. Gaffney, himself, was challenged in building a career as an accounting freelance/contract employee that would allow him to take care of his family, and maintain the lifestyle of fatherhood he had come to appreciate. As a CPA, he saw firsthand the sacrifice of relying on work from temporary staffing firms and decided he could create a better option for all parties. Today, Gaffney says that VouchedIn has high marks from both freelancers and its enterprise employers, driving the demand to grow the platform beyond just accounting and finance professionals. In January 2017, the company will officially announce its partnership with the YWCA of Metropolitan Chicago to provide the VouchedIn software platform for the organization’s career placement services to help women be more successful in securing employment. With this will come the expansion of VouchedIn to offer the same enterprise-level projects for freelance professionals in IT, advertising, PR, training, legal and compliance, sales, operations, HR, engineering and more. “The numbers around the globe make it clear, the percentage of freelance and contract workers is growing, and fast, thanks to technology. It’s not just small businesses that see the value of having accessibility to highly qualified professionals for their team, but major enterprise companies.” Gaffney adds that as the on demand worker market grows, VouchedIn plans to be at the forefront of meeting the needs of freelancers and contract employees and corporations. Dan Gaffney Dan Gaffney, CPA and Founder of VouchedIn.com, the first online freelance work service that uses proprietary software to create immediate matches for available projects, creating an on demand work force for enterprise companies. The company, initially for financial and accounting freelancers, will expand its platform in early 2017 to meet all enterprise freelance needs, including marketing, IT, legal, training, sales, admin and more. Gaffney has more than 20 years of business and financial experience with some of the top audit and consulting firms in the U.S., and served as a chief audit executive for a Fortune 500 company for more than five years. Personal Marketing Plans

Personal Marketing Plans Many job seekers make the mistake of investing all their time and energy seeking out open positions on the job boards and then trying to make their skill set match the job specification. The reality is that only a small percentage of job seekers find their jobs through the boards. A better strategy is to research companies that you have an interest in and market yourself to the decision makers in these companies whether there is an open position or not. Your goal is to get your foot in the door and create a relationship where none existed before. To make a marketing plan, analyze the following criteria: 1. What types of positions are you suited for? 2. What industries do you wish to target or which industries will derive the most value from your skill set? 3. What cities and states are you willing to work in? 4. What size company do you want to work for? Once you deterime your search parameters you can research specific companies that fall into your designated categories. For example , if you are a financial services professional in New York City, you can research firms that have a significant presence in Manhattan. Search engines, local newspapers, business magazines, and even the yellow pages can provide valuable information regarding companies that meet your search criteria. By incorporating a marketing plan into your search methodology you can increase your chances of meeting people in a position to hire and potentially decrease the amount of time you spend in search.
